she dressed her children in clothes made of the night

oil painting on birch panel
14 inches square
sold

people often ask how my work has changed with children expecting the answer to be that all the children pictured in the paintings are the addition but they've always been there. the change has been in the deliberate nature of my process. i no longer have the time to experiment while i work, the time actually spent painting is so much harder to find so instead i spend time drawing and planning and researching and more and more my starting point for the paintings are the titles rather than the titles coming last. i've noticed that these pieces are my favorites which surprises me, in school i painted abstract and was in love with abstract expressionism. the process of the painting was what mattered, in fact my love of little patterns of stripes and polka dots tucked away in the details of the pieces is about a visual representation of the time spent painting, sort of a tally mark of time. more and more when i begin a painting i know every detail of what it will look like before i begin and i really enjoy it, now if i could just find the time to finish all of the paintings in my head that i would really enjoy.

Sigh. I love this one. I love all your pieces, but I love this one. I also love what you say about your creative process and being a mom. I feel this shift, too. The symbols and the styles and the subjects are from all the time I spent artisting (I just made that word up) before kids, but with kids, your perception of self and of time and of worth and of intentionality changes.

And I find myself in a dance with abstraction and figurative painting too. And I'm finding my paintings come from titles... almost little poems, which shouldn't surprise me as I spent 20 years writing poetry.

This is a different journey, being a mother and artist, than is the traditional journey of being an artist. It's an interesting ride.

Hi Amanda, Just wanted to pop in and say how much your work speaks to me. Knowing also that you are a mother + artist makes your work even more personal. I have found similar changes in my work as well in regards to time. My work time is much more "productive" than it used to be!
Love this piece. The title is just, perfect.

I know about time issues....my time to paint and draw is mostly at night when either I'm feeling creative or ready to crash on the couch after chasing the 1,3 and 5 year old around all day. I'm finding it hard to sleep at night sometimes because of too many pictures in the head:) But I'll take overabundance over drought anytime.
I love your titles, he/she or with specific names.

oh my...another favorite! this is so magical and i too can relate to the night time theme - stealing moments while all the children are dreaming to finally get the space to let my art come forth. every morning my youngest son likes to check on my progress and give me the BEST critiques. It does however leave me a daytime zombie/
whatever works while your kids are young! im a little obssessed with the topic of art before/after kids. it all boils down to science - we can't be in 2 places at once. it sure is a trip, well worth taking. i write about this often on my blog-would love to collect others thoughts there.

Your art is so amazing and magical, your characters so real and inviting, hauntingly beautiful at times and always with a deep deep history that inspires pursuit.

You seem to be balancing life/art quite beautifully thanks for sharing your gift.

this is gorgeous, the whole concept is beautiful, as is the layers of color. Your faces seem so melancholy yet so lovely.

i've started to respond to everyone's comments on this post so many times but get sidetracked exploring all of your blogs so just quickly - thank you all so much.

I came to your blog via Tollipop and I'm so happy to have found you! I have had your etsy shop *hearted* for a long time, but didn't realize you had a blog.
I adore everything about this particular painting. Your style is so distinctive and.......real, yes, that's the word. I will look forward to coming back regularly. Thanks for sharing~~
