she took the darkness from the night sky and held it close

oil on wood block
about 3.5 by 5 inches
$150. available through the enormous tiny web site

this and a few other of the series it's a part of are still available over on the website for enormous tiny.

a few of you might have noticed i lacked the follow through with my last blog post. i tried to just adjust my daily project but it turned out to be too much, unreliable internet connections and the desire to actually not work for a day or two of my life won out but do expect me to work some new idea out and resurrect my project in some form in the next day or two.

many many drawings and many more things to come

small works on paper
sold
view the entire series on flickr or on my new blog just for them

in an attempt to create a bit of consistency i decided to start a little project this year of a new piece every day and drawing being so much easier than painting logistically it seemed the natural choice. it's been really fun and rewarding completing a piece from concept to being sold and on it's way around the world all in the same day but tomorrow i leave on vacation for 11 days so i'm having to reevaluate. one fabulous suggestion was to simply complete the titles every day and i have to say i love that idea, it is the concept not the execution that is the most difficult part of the project the problem being i've realized catching up on the drawing and listing when i return gets a bit complicated especially when i've already been having some problems staying on schedule due to a broken scanner. so i'm planning some changes to the entire project. i'll be posting a title on my blog every day and filling in the pictures as the work is completed but i will no longer constrain myself to it being drawings or being completed every day. it's actually truer to my original concept that the project be about creating every day rather than about finishing every day. so you can still check my blog daily for a title and the majority of the work will still be drawings so it will still be a fairly constant stream of new pieces but there will be other things as well and lapses and big batches finished at a time as i like to do (which hopefully will also make it easier for people to purchase rather than the at times mad rush when i'm finishing single drawings at a time). so starting today because i'm completely unprepared to be catching a plane at 6:00 am tomorrow and don't really have time to do a drawing visit my new blog daily for an update on my project but not necessarily a finished piece.
so thanks to everyone who has been following the project on my blog, on etsy, on flickr and on twitter and i hope everyone enjoys it as much going forward, i'm thinking it will be even better without the constraints i've placed on myself to this point.
wow, thanks for reading such a long rambling post.

there were so many stars the night turned to day

10 inch square
oil painting on birch panel
$800 available through sebastian foster gallery

a camouflaged landscape inspired by some painting from art history that i can't quite recall but trying to google it and seeing the things that appear when searching "german expressionist" is just too frustrating and it might be russian anyway now that i think about it, a somewhat cartoonish couple painted i think as a reaction to all the custom work i've done lately that while always great fun it can leave me wanting to paint things that have no basis in reality, and a sky filled with stars inspired by a recent much needed vacation.

simon

acrylic and pencil on birch panel
6 inches square
$250.

this is part of my latest series for the series of enormous tiny art shows, this time in LA. behind each little person is their life story. simon was a boy who yearned to explore then he fell in love and settled down and one day his life all came together. you can make out bits and pieces of the stories if you view the paintings here.

mary sailed away from home in a boat filled with flowers - limited edition print

7 inch square image on 9 inch square paper
print of oil painting
edition of 60
$45.

mary and "she saw through the night by the light from her crown of stars" are now available in my shop. i think this print of mary is my favorite yet, it's amazing how much it looks like the original.

this painting is based on a superstition of flowers on a boat being bad luck. when i was painting it i couldn't remember if i had read that they were good or bad, it was just the imagery that i was fascinated with. to me it evokes ideas of hope and loss and just feels like a story and feels like it must mean something. and now that i've painted it i'm just in love with the idea of things that are beautiful being bad luck, a new series of work in that.

she saw through the night by the light from her crown of stars

oil painting on birch panel
ten inches square
original is sold but now available as a print

i'm happy to be part of the new gallery sebastian foster devoted to "contemporary art from emerging and established artists". my page of original paintings features a selection of some new work of mine as well as some favorites i've previously posted here.
do browse the other artists for some really wonderful work and a big thank you to matte and vivienne for introducing me to such a fabulous opportunity.

i almost forgot to mentiong anything about the piece itself. there's a direction my work is taking lately, something about nature and controlling it and seeing signs in it, can't really place my finger on all of it yet and exactly where it is headed but i'm having fun.

this is yet another where the title came first and once it popped into my head it was already one of my favorite paintings before i'd even picked up a brush.
